Randstad are recruiting for a Design Engineer for a client based in Bedford to start as soon as possible.

You are an inventive and creative industrial or product design professional with high mechanical competency and a passion for flight or robotic systems. You will have 3+ years of Solidworks CAD experience within a relevant aerospace, product or industrial design setting. You will be involved from the concept phase of exciting new products and projects through CAD development to supporting prototyping, build, integration, flight testing and beyond.

You should be comfortable in working with the team to understand and interpret user and customer needs and design drivers, be confident in proposing novel concepts and ideas, and have the technical skills to communicate, design and deliver them.

You will be working in a multidisciplinary environment so strong communication is important. Your background is practical with an ability to think beyond the conventional. Good experience of lightweight materials and manufacturing processes (including plastics, composites & additive manufacture (AM)) is highly desirable.

Appropriate skill sets from mechanical props, visual effects or design model making backgrounds may also be considered.

Essential skills:

  • Recognised design based or equivalent qualification to minimum BA/BSC level.
  • 3+ years product or industrial design.
  • 3+ years CAD experience (Solidworks).
  • Strong mechanical ability.
  • Experience of materials and manufacturing processes including lightweight and AM.

Desirable skills:

  • Fixed wing / multirotor build and fly
  • Basic engineering calcs or FEA analysis
  • Interest in system dynamics
  • Experience of aero design.
  • Masters degree
  • Design for integration of electronic systems.

Security clearance: The successful candidate will be required to be cleared to at least BPSS which involves a criminal record check. Further clearance to SC level desirable but not essential

Main activities:

Your role will be to support the technical design and development of unmanned vehicles, payloads and R&D projects in the air and maritime domains.

  • Cooperative teamwork (technical delivery of design based activities)
  • Liaison with suppliers and technicians
  • Involvement with planning, reporting, presentation and review of technical work (internal or external customer facing)
  • Support experimental activities (ground based testing, flight / water based testing)
  • Involvement with planning, reporting and presentation of experimental work (internal or external customer facing)

In return you will receive a salary of £35,000-£40,000.
