UK Customs Manager

We are currently looking for a Customs Taxation specialist to join one of the UK's leading manufacturing businesses in South Wales. With Brexit leaning towards a no deal situation, this role will be crucial. This role would suit someone who is looking for a challenging and rewarding position, both in the UK and in Europe. The Role

We are recruiting for an experienced, driven candidate who can assist the business in meeting its customs, legislative and compliance requirements especially in the UK. The job holder will also provide specialist customs advice and work collaboratively with the business in order to implement solutions to operational issues.

The successful candidate will be based in the UK, ideally in Port Talbot, and will be part of our clients Taxation Department comprising 6 tax specialists in Port Talbot, 4 tax specialists and 3 customs experts in the Netherlands. The UK Customs Manager will report directly to the UK tax manager.

To carry out this role successfully, you will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:

* Providing customs expertise as necessary to the AEO Project and should they become AEO certified, responsibility for maintaining the AEO certification.
* Designing and implementing processes and procedures to facilitate the importation of goods from 3rdparty countries and ensuring all import and export customs requirements are met.
* Making an active contribution in centralising and optimising UK processes currently performed by different departments as well as (partly) outsourced to 3rd
* Acting as a point of expertise to advise and instruct the business on all customs related matters, including dealing with ad hoc customs queries and supporting internal departments such as purchasing, sales and logistics with advice, information and instructions on relevant (legislative) changes.
* Keeping abreast of new and emerging (European) customs legislation, court rulings and guidelines and taking a proactive approach to implement changes throughout the business to ensure activities are carried out in an efficient and compliant manner.
* Taking responsibility for stakeholder engagement across the business to train and upskill, including raising awareness of customs requirements throughout the business and providing internal training where required.
* Working with the business to optimise internal administrative systems, including IT processes, which are necessary in order to support customs compliance, including defining and supporting implementation of the solutions required to meet requirements and reviewing performance of vendors used to deliver the service.
* Ensuring robust and efficient systems are in place to ensure compliance with all requirements, including taking an active role in the selection of vendors used to deliver customs brokerage services and assisting with system changes.
* Working with VAT colleagues to, manage intrastat activities with foreign VAT compliance obligations.
* Liaising with HMRC and other regulatory bodies including supervising and handling physical and administrative checks by customs authorities
* Contributing to relevant consultations and participating in industry focus Groups.
* A priority will be dealing with customs consequences of Brexit and ensuring that compliance obligations are understood and systems/processes are in place to ensure additional requirements can be met.

The Ideal Candidate

* Educated to at least degree level, preferably possessing a relevant tax, customs or logistics qualification (e.g. ACA, CTA).
* Extensive demonstrable experience in a customs or international trade support position and with an in-depth knowledge of customs laws and regulations relevant to a multinational manufacturing company supplying international markets.
* Change management/project management experience.
* Highly Proficient with IT software, including experience in relevant Windows packages (word, excel, powerpoint) is essential. Familiarity with SAP and customs-related software is desirable.
* Ability to combine conceptual thinking and professional technique with a pragmatic approach.
* Proven track record of functioning well within a small team and a great sense of responsibility, a practical/hands-on attitude, strong analytical skills and good numerical insight, a proactive and decisive attitude.
* Ability to communicate technical concepts (both verbally and in writing) to non-customs specialists in a clear and readily understandable way. Proficiency in English is essential. A second language, such as German or Dutch is desirable.
* Experience of logistics and physical distribution within a manufacturing environment is also desirable.
